Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency hosts videos, comments and an analysis of the way in which popular culture portrays women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular media. In addition she has a mission to increase awareness about online harassment targeted at women and those who are marginalized. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. Alongside being a popular public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. A woman with ambitions to create a web series that examined the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by an online campaign. However, the attacks did not hinder her. It only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. To honor the numerous achievements she's made for feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. The educational nonprofit explores women's representations in the pop-culture narratives.
